Football live Journalist Benson: Whiting agreed in 2011 that changing tires under red flags is not very fair, but nothing ever happened
Benson reflected on the controversial F1 rule. BBC editor Andrew Benson spoke out about changing tires under red flags.
After the victory of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, this point of the regulations began to be discussed once again. The journalist recalled that this happened more than once - in particular, the rule potentially decided the fate of the Monaco Grand Prix 2011 and Italy 2020.
I remember that after that race in Monaco I asked the late F1 racing director Charlie Whiting why this rule existed. He agreed that it was not very fair and needed to be looked into. But nothing happened while he was alive, and nothing happened after his death on the eve of the 2019 season.
This seems anomalous, and one can argue that the rule is unfair. It can also be said that in circumstances like those in Brazil on Sunday, it forces teams and drivers to take unnecessary risks.
On the other hand, we can say that the regulations are as they are, and this creates the potential for sensations and additional interest.
The rule will probably be revised now. But I wouldn`t bet on it, " Benson wrote.
